Virginia Naturally School Recognition Program
The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries' Virginia Naturally School Recognition program honored Daniels Run Elementary School for its efforts during the 2018-2019 school year. Congratulations to Daniels Run for being selected as one of the Virginia Naturally Schools for a 13th straight year. Virginia Naturally Schools is the official environmental education school recognition program of the Commonwealth, administered by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with support from the Department of Education, Department of Environmental Quality and other resource agencies. The Virginia Board of Education has recognized the Virginia Naturally School program as the official environmental education school recognition program for the state. This program recognizes the wonderful efforts of many Virginia schools to increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of our youngest citizens.
Since Daniels Run has made a long-term commitment to increasing the environmental literacy of our students, each year our school will have the opportunity to add to our accomplishments while continuing with past efforts. Daniels Run already met the requirements to receive a plaque for our first year of participation for the 2006-2007 school year. A state bird pennant was awarded for our second year of participation for the 2007-2008 school year, a state flower pennant for our third year of participation for the 2008-2009, a state shell pennant for our fourth year of participation for the 2009-2010 school year, a state fish pennant for our fifth year of participation for the 2010-2011 school year, a state insect for our sixth year of participation for the 2011-2012 school year, a state bat pennant for our seventh year of participation for the 2012-2013 school year, and a state fossil for our eighth year of participation for the 2013-2014 school year. The last received pennant was the Virginia State Tree, a Flowering Dogwood for the 2014-2015 school year.
In 2015, Daniels Run also received the Eco-Schools USA Green Flag Award from the National Wildlife Federation. In 2013, Daniels Run achieved the Bronze award by fulfilling the requirements needed for the School Grounds pathway. To earn the Green Flag Award, Daniels Run worked on the Energy pathway and the Consumption and Waste pathway, as well as continuing with the School Grounds initiative.
During the 2011-2012 school year, Daniels Run also became an Official Monarch Waystation through MonachWatch. Monarch Waystations provide milkweed, nectar plants, and shelter for monarchs throughout their annual cycle of reproduction and migration. Daniels Run Monarch Waystation is number 5617.
In June, 2004, Daniels Run was certified as Schoolyard Habitat #2129 by the National Wildlife Federation.
